Q. What Do Prayer Partners Do?
A. They pray for one another, of course!
Q. How long does the program run?
A. Prayer Partners begins the Sunday before Ash Wednesday and ends the
Sunday after Easter.
Q. What is the schedule for Prayer
Partners?
A. Registration begins January 17, and ends February 7. The Prayer Partner
Kick Off Lunch is February 14. The Celebration Lunch is April 11.
Q. How much time does it take?
A. You should set aside some time everyday to pray for your partner,
yourself and for other people. That is one way you will grow in faith, by using
self discipline. It can take as much or as little time as you decide. We do
want you to attend the Kick-Off Lunch on February 7 and the Celebration Lunch on
April 11.
Q. Do I get any materials to help me
through this process?
A. If you are a child, you will receive a Prayer Journal. Adults can get a
copy of the Child’s Prayer Journal, if they request one from Mrs. Elizabeth.
You also receive a Prayer Partner Information Card. This card tells you about
your partner, their family, their pets, their jobs or school, and their prayer
concerns. It also provides you with contact information for your Prayer
Partner.
Q. Do I have to find my own Partner?
A. No. You will be matched with either an adult (if you are a child or
youth) or a child (if you are an adult.) We prefer not to put boys with girls
or girls with boys, but have done so a few times in the past. This happens only
after we talk to your parents and get their okay.
Q. Can I request a specific person to
be my Prayer Partner?
A. I wish you wouldn’t. We work very hard to find compatible partners for
everyone who signs up. Part of the joy of Prayer Partners is getting to know
someone knew, and growing in spirit by learning to love new people. In other
words, even if you request someone, don’t count on getting that person.
Q. What are the age, permission,
information and Safe Sanctuary requirements to be a Prayer Partner?
A. Age Requirement: You must be enrolled in Kindergarten or be
older than kindergarten age to be a Prayer Partner. Speak to Mrs. Elizabeth if
your child is younger than Kindergarten and wishes to participate.
Parental Permission: If you are under the age of
18, you must have a signed permission form (found at the bottom of the Prayer
Partner Registration Form) from your parent in order to participate. If you are
older than 18, you don’t have to have permission from your mom or dad.
Information Requirement: You must turn in a Prayer
Partner Registration form on or before 2/7/10.
Safe Sanctuary Requirement: If you plan to be
partnered with a person under the age of 18, and are above the age of 13, YOU
MUST BE SAFE SANCTUARY APPROVED. Safe Sanctuary forms can be obtained from
Elizabeth Edmiston or the church office.
Q. Do I have to buy my prayer partner
gifts?
A. No, of course not! You are not taking the place of the Easter
Bunny or Santa Claus. You are stepping forward in Christian love, and that
is a wonderful gift for anyone who receives it. Just knowing someone prays
for you is a great thing! I am always happy to hear someone say they will
pray for me.
If you choose to give tokens, remember: think small.
Cards and emails are always appreciated. You can also leave things in any
child’s Sunday school mailbox.
Q. Do I need to take them places?
A. As far as taking your partner places, that is between you and your
prayer partner and their parents. I would offer up the following: The only St.
John’s Sanctioned Prayer Partner Opportunities are functions held at the
church. These include Sunday morning and Wednesday night activities, as well as
special events. Check your church calendar and invite your partner to church
activities. Sit together during worship services or Wednesday night meals.
Q. Can I take my Prayer Partner on an
outing?
A. You might choose to invite your prayer partner to go somewhere with
you. First, ask the parents BEFORE you mention anything to the child.
Families have to work out schedules. Remember, you would need to have two (2)
Safe Sanctuary adults with you. Sometimes Prayer Partners teams go on outings
together.
Q. Why should I do this?
A. I can only think of benefits when it comes to being a Prayer Partner.
Speaking from experience, I know that being a Prayer Partner has helped me
become more intentional in my prayer life. It is a wonderful thing, to know
someone is praying for you by name, and has your prayer concerns on their mind.
You also have the prospect to become friends with someone you might not
otherwise have the opportunity to get to know better. The only negative I can
think of with this program is that every person in our church doesn’t have a
personal prayer partner. If you have doubts as to whether you should be an
adult Prayer Partner, talk to some our past adult Prayer Partners, like Tony
Lisenby, Jeff, Elizabeth or Jake Edmiston you find, Eileen Hale, Elizabeth Elz,
If you want to know if being a Prayer Partner would benefit your child, ask
Sandy Carroll, Grace Lisenby, Lyle or Ashley Fraser or Elizabeth Edmiston.
