"Gud är den samme i dag, morra, och för euigt." "God is the same today, tomorrow, and forever."
In 1871, a group of Swedish immigrants, living near Union Hill, 3 ½ miles south of Georgetown, began holding worship services in their homes. By 1882, the group had grown to a size where a full-time minister was assigned and 3 acres of land was purchased to build a new church. On March 10, 1882, the Swedish Methodist Episcopal Brushy Church (Svenska Metodistkyrkan at Brushy) was formally organized. In early 1906 the church was moved into Georgetown and became the Georgetown Swedish Methodist Church (St. John's Cemetery still remains at the site of the old church on the corner of FM1460 and Westinghouse Road.) In 1938, the name was changed to St. John's Methodist Church and by 1948 the services were conducted solely in English. Today, with over 700 full members, more than 1,000 persons locally are touched by St. John's ministry.
