8/13 UPDATE: Dr Jerry Chism will not be able to assume his role as pastor of St John’s due to health issues. Our District Superintendent, Brad Brittain, along with our Bishop, Mike Lowry, have commenced the search to find us a new pastor. Bishop Lowry will be here next Sunday, preaching all three services.
If you have questions or comments, I encourage you to reach out to Fred Barhydt, the chair of our SPPR team or to myself, Ken Sommerville, your lay leader. Please continue to pray for Jerry and his healing and keep St John’s in prayer as we continue to do God’s work in Georgetown, Texas.
7/16 UPDATE: Dr Chism’s first Sunday will be August 6th. This will be a combined worship service at 10:30am in the FLC with a Potluck welcome luncheon and gift card “pounding” to follow.
5/1 UPDATE: Dr Chism will be visiting our church and congregation on May 17th. Please come to the Wednesday Value meal to meet Dr Chism.
St John’s UMC welcomes Dr Chism as our new senior pastor beginning July 2, 2017. Dr Chism is currently the senior pastor at William C. Martin UMC in Bedford, Texas.
Dr Chism is an ordained elder and has served within our conference since 1977. In addition to his Masters of Theology from Perkins, Dr Chism holds three doctoral degrees: a D Min from St Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, an Ed D from The Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana, and a PhD from Oxford University in the UK.
Dr Chism’s personal philosophy on ministry:
I was raised in the Methodist Church and felt my call to ministry in my second year of college. I have had numerous opportunities to pursue various non-ministry occupations, but I am not only called to ordained ministry, I love being a pastor. It is such an honor to be a part of the lives of my parishioners and to preach God’s Word in the church. I believe in being actively involved in my church’s community and hold evangelism (church growth) as the primary concern in my ministry.
I have loved being the pastor of all of my churches and I am looking forward to coming to Georgetown. St. John’s is such a beautiful church and I have friends who served as your pastor in the past…and they all spoke glowingly about their years as your minister.
We will have a grand future shared in ministry.
Grace and Peace, Jerry
Please welcome Dr Chism with the grace and love you have shown me.
