And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” Luke 1:46-47 New International Version
The warm, loving welcome Mary receives from her cousin Elizabeth causes her soul to sing. The young Mary may perhaps have had doubts about her reception, but when Elizabeth greeted her with “God has blessed you above all women, and your Child is blessed”, Mary’s doubts were put to rest and she was now sure that her life and the Child she would bear were in God’s hands.
Her joy is reflected in her words of praise that come from a heart full of gratitude to her Lord, and reflects a joy we should all feel as believers saved by grace. We magnify God when we enlarge our vision to take in more of His greatness. Our souls and spirits do indeed have reason to praise and glorify His Holy name.
Lord God, as once again we celebrate Your coming to live among us as one of us, may we be given grace to magnify Your greatness and rejoice in our salvation. Amen.
