The God Who Gives

The God Who Gives

By: John Aleman

Romans 15:5 says: “Now may the God Who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus.” (NASB)

The words ‘perseverance’ and ‘encouragement’ are interchanged in different Bible versions. King James Version says ‘patience and consolation’.
New Revised Standard Version says ‘steadfastness and encouragement’.

God just doesn’t just give us encouragement but also perseverance, patience and steadfastness. There’s no stipulation, such as “when we pray”, or “if we ask”, or “if we follow all the rules in the book”. It just says He gives us patience and encouragement. Don’t we feel that from time to time, that we are lacking in persevering or encouragement? Isn’t it wonderful to know that we can go to Him for help and He will help us make another day? He will.

Pondering over this scripture, I reflect upon this part: the God Who Gives. He really gives us a lot! Here’s a list of some of the scriptures that I found by searching for “the God Who Gives”.

God gives:
Songs in the night – Job 35:10 NASB “… ‘Where is God my Maker, Who gives songs in the night.”
Grace and glory – Psalm 84:11 NASB “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”
Breath and spirit – Isaiah 42:5 NASB “Thus says God the LORD, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread out the earth and its offspring, Who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it.”

Here are a few others for you to look up:
Rain in its season – Jeremiah 5:24
The Spirit without measure – John 3:34
The Victory – 1 Corinthians 15:57
His Holy Spirit – 1 Thessalonians 4:8
Life – 1 Timothy 6:13
Wisdom – James 1:5

That’s a pretty good list of the things God just gives away. Our needs can be on many levels: emotional, spiritual, physical, in relationships, financial, etc. God knows we are flesh and blood and knows we can be needy. It’s all stuff to help us carry on while we are still traveling this side of eternity. It’s like God is going to make sure that we are equipped to make it through this life to eternity.
Remember, God does not call upon the equipped, He equips the called. All of these are needed now – wisdom, life, rain (for the spirit and soul), Holy Spirit, grace, songs in the night and encouragement – which is where we started!

Whatever you need to make it today – He has it. And He gives it.
