Often in life we’re faced with big decisions. Sometimes it’s God calling us out of our comfort zone into a new and exciting area. Sometimes it’s a new and exciting area tempting us, but God is calling us to stay where we are. The hard part is figuring out which one it is.
How do you do that? I’m glad you asked!
First, you have to be rooted in God. If you’re not in a place where you’re communicating with Him regularly, it’s going to be much harder to hear what He has to say. That doesn’t mean that once a decision comes up, you should start working on your relationship with Him. It means you have to be maintaining it all the time, because you never know when a major decision will come up. If you’re not already connected to Him, that extra step can really muddle the process.
Second, watch out for quicksand. By that, I mean don’t latch onto an idea of what it should be and keep being pulled that way just by the force of the idea. Take in new information, learn all you can about both sides of the decision, but don’t let one draw you in simply because it intrigues you more.
Finally, wait. Unless your decision is, “Should I have Taco Bell or Chick-fil-a?” (which by the way, seriously? Chick-fil-a, always.), there is no need to make a huge life-changing decision immediately. Wait for God to speak to you and reveal what He wants. Sometimes we rush into decisions too fast and then have to be redirected by God. That’s not a pleasant situation to be in and it often hurts since we thought we were doing the right thing. Life is so much easier and better if we wait on Him and follow His perfect plan.
